• Ademola Lookman is back in training. He was released from the Nigeria squad before the 6 October friendly in Russia as a precaution, and is ahead of Sorloth in the race to be fit.
• Alexander Sorloth is training again but has not played a game this season because of a long-standing muscle problem.
• Alejandro Grimaldo is not back yet, and Pablo Barrios misses Saturday’s league trip to Alaves.
• Julian Alvarez started the 20 September derby against Real Madrid on the bench after a summer of exit talk, so his role is worth watching.

Manchester United

United’s list is longer. From SI’s international break injury audit and club reporters this week:

• Benjamin Sesko has a recurrence of his shin injury and did not join the Slovenia squad.
• Marcus Rashford (hip) and Kobbie Mainoo both withdrew from England duty before a ball was kicked.
• Patrick Dorgu pulled up with a hamstring problem after 30 minutes for Denmark, and Noussair Mazraoui was hurt playing for Morocco. Left-back is thin.
• Amad missed all five league games through injury.
• Carlos Baleba, signed from Brighton, and Matthijs de Ligt, out since November 2025 after back surgery, both played in a behind-closed-doors friendly with Lausanne-Sport. Either could be involved in Madrid.
• Manuel Ugarte is out long term with a knee injury.

Form: Atletico rolling in La Liga, United still searching

Atletico lost 2-1 at Liverpool on Matchday 1. Marcos Llorente gave them the lead at Anfield before Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister turned it round. Domestically they look sharp: five wins from seven La Liga games, second behind Barcelona going into the break, with a 2-1 derby win over Real Madrid at the Metropolitano on 20 September.

United opened their first Champions League campaign since 2023/24 with a 4-0 win over Sabah at Old Trafford, with goals from Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Sesko and Lisandro Martinez. The league is another story. They are 12th with five points from five games, and Opta Analyst counts only two wins in seven games in all competitions for Michael Carrick, who was given a permanent deal after a third-place finish last season.

The numbers say United are better than their results. They have taken more shots (113) than any other Premier League team and had more touches in the opposition box (182). The problem is the quality: their average shot comes from 17.9 metres, the second-furthest in the league, and they have hit the woodwork six times. Opta also flags a high press with a defence that lacks pace behind it, which is exactly the space Atletico like to attack.

• Ademola Lookman, the Nigerian angle: the Super Eagles forward joined Atletico from Atalanta in February 2026. This season has started slowly. Nigerian outlet Soccernet counted one goal in seven appearances up to 1 October, and he came off the bench in the 67th minute of the derby with Atletico already 2-0 up. For Nigeria he started both AFCON 2027 qualifiers in September, the 2-1 win over Madagascar and the 3-0 defeat in Guinea-Bissau, without a goal or assist. He can play as a second striker or on either wing, which makes him a useful weapon against a tired back line. ChampBet had him at 67.00 for Champions League top scorer on 7 October.
• Jonathan David: the Canada striker has made a bright start in Spain and started the derby ahead of Lookman and Alvarez.
• Marcos Llorente: scored at Anfield on Matchday 1. He breaks forward from deep and punishes teams who press high and leave space.

Manchester United

• Bruno Fernandes: scored against Sabah and runs everything United create. ChampBet had him at 21.00 in the Champions League Most Assists market.
• Matheus Cunha: scored his first Champions League goal against Sabah. Opta notes he has been pushed into a central role that does not suit him, so watch where Carrick plays him.
• Bryan Mbeumo: the most logical central option if Sesko misses out, according to Opta, because his movement troubles deep defences.
• Carlos Baleba: a possible debut. United need his legs in midfield against Atletico’s runners.

We lean Atletico Madrid to win at 2.16. Atletico are at home, in good league form and fresh from beating Real Madrid. United arrive with problems in exactly the wrong places: no fit Sesko, doubts over Rashford, Mainoo and Amad, and two left-backs carrying knocks. Their high press with a slow back line looks risky against a side that loves to break, and Atletico have several forwards who can run in behind. Our scoreline guess is 2-1.

The risk is real. Atletico led at Anfield and still lost, and United dominate the ball in most games. If Fernandes and Cunha click, United can win this.
