- Out: Manuel Ugarte (knee, not expected back until 2027) and Tom Heaton (hamstring). Matthijs de Ligt is close after back surgery but is more likely to make a Champions League bench first.
Portugal coach Jorge Jesus also said Bruno Fernandes had been playing through an injury for United’s last three games before the break.
Tottenham Hotspur
According to football.london’s Spurs injury round-up:
- Micky van de Ven, the captain, had his hand stood on against Serbia. Netherlands coach Xavi said it was not a big injury, and he should be available.
- Jan Paul van Hecke left the Netherlands camp with an injury after being stood on in the same fixture a week earlier. The extent is still unclear.
- Pedro Porro is likely to miss out with the hamstring injury he picked up against Aston Villa.
- Dejan Kulusevski is nearing a return after a long knee lay-off. Mykhailo Mudryk, Wilson Odobert and Xavi Simons are expected to miss the game.
Form and context
United are 12th with five points: one win, two draws, two defeats, eight goals scored and eight conceded. They lost 2-0 at Hull on the opening day, beat Ipswich 5-2 with a Bruno Fernandes hat-trick, drew 2-2 at Everton, lost the derby 1-0 at home and drew 1-1 at Fulham. Opta data on the Premier League’s site shows United have had more touches in the opposition box (182) than any other team, and allowed opponents fewer touches in their own box (92) than anyone. The football has been better than the results.
Spurs are bottom with two points after their worst ever Premier League start. They lost at home to Newcastle (0-2) and Aston Villa (2-3) and away at Brentford (0-3), and their two points came from 0-0 draws at Nottingham Forest and at home to Everton. The Villa defeat brought their only two league goals of the season. De Zerbi has handed 26 starts to players who did not play for Spurs last season, by far the most in the league, and Opta notes that six of the previous 11 sides to do that finished 17th or lower.
