Is football betting legal in Nigeria?
Yes, football betting is legal in Nigeria when you use a licensed operator and you are 18 or older. Betting is regulated at state level. In Lagos, the Lagos State Lotteries and Gaming Authority (LSLGA) licenses operators, and you can check any brand on its official register before you deposit.
ChampBet is run by Champ Betting Limited, which appears on the LSLGA register of licensed operators under sports betting and online casino. For the full legal picture, read is online betting legal in Nigeria.
Step 1: Choose a licensed sportsbook
Before anything else, check three things:
- The licence. Follow the LSLGA’s steps to check if a gaming operator is licensed. If the brand is missing, do not deposit.
- Naira payments you already use, such as OPay or bank transfer gateways.
- Clear rules and real support. Look for published sports rules, a responsible gaming page and a way to reach a person.
ChampBet’s help centre has its sports betting rules, FAQs and casino help, and support answers on WhatsApp and live chat.
Step 2: Open your account
Registration takes about a minute.
- Tap REGISTER at the top of champbet.ng.
- Enter your phone number after the +234 code, without the first 0 (for example 8012345678).
- Add your e-mail and choose a password.
- If you have one, switch on Have a promo code? and enter it.
- Tick the box to confirm you are over 18 and accept the terms.
- Tap REGISTER, then enter the 4-digit code sent to your phone by SMS.
The ChampBet registration pop-up. “Having trouble? Contact Support” opens WhatsApp.
Our ChampBet registration guide covers every screen. On mobile, you can add champbet.ng to your home screen so it opens like an app: see the ChampBet mobile guide.
Step 3: Fund your account
Once you are logged in, tap Deposit at the top of the screen to open the cashier. Choose a method (Paystack, Flutterwave, OPay or PalmPay), enter an amount and confirm in your payment app. ChampBet does not add a fee to deposits. The deposit guide shows each method.
New players can use the Champion’s Kickoff offer on a first sportsbook bet: a multiple of ₦2,000 or more with at least three selections at odds of 1.40 or higher. If it wins, your next bet gets a 50% profit boost. If it loses, you get your stake back as a sports bonus, up to ₦30,000. Full terms apply on the Champion’s Kickoff page, and our welcome bonus guide explains the details.
Step 4: Find a match
Open the pre-match sportsbook. It lists thousands of pre-match events and hundreds live. Use the search box for a team or competition, or the menu shortcuts: Popular Matches, Popular Competitions, Multiple Of The Day, Boosted Odds, Today’s Bets and Upcoming Matches. Football sits under All Sports, with competitions grouped by country and region.
Each match row shows the result odds (W1, X, W2), a handicap line and a goals total.
Step 5: Pick a market
A market is the question you are betting on. Beginners should start with these:
| Market | What you are betting on | Example pick |
|---|---|---|
| 1X2 (W1, X, W2) | Home win, draw or away win | W1 |
| Double chance | Two of the three results | 1X (home win or draw) |
| Draw No Bet | A team to win, stake back on a draw | Away DNB |
| Over/Under goals | Total goals above or below a line | Over 2.5 |
| GG/NG | Both teams score, or not | GG |
| Handicap | Result after a goal head start | Home -1 |
Tap + on any match row (for example +363) to open every market for that game. For a full explanation, read football betting markets explained, and keep our betting terms and meanings glossary open for codes like DNB and HT/FT.
Step 6: Read the odds
Nigerian bookmakers show decimal odds. Multiply your stake by the odds to see your return, stake included. ₦1,000 at 2.00 returns ₦2,000, which is ₦1,000 profit. ₦1,000 at 1.50 returns ₦1,500.
Odds also tell you how likely the bookmaker thinks a result is: divide 1 by the odds. Odds of 2.00 suggest about a 50% chance, and odds of 1.25 about 80%. Our guide to how betting odds work goes deeper.
Step 7: Build your bet slip
Tap the odds to add a selection to the bet slip (on the right of the screen on desktop).
- Choose single or multiple. One selection is a single. Two or more selections from different matches can go together as a multiple, where every leg must win.
- Enter your stake or tap ₦5,000, ₦10,000 or ₦50,000.
- Check the numbers. The slip shows ODDS and POSSIBLE WIN. On qualifying multiples it adds an automatic ACCUMULATOR BONUS and a FINAL PAYOUT.
- Tap BET NOW. The odds setting under the slip (“Always ask”) controls what happens if a price changes before your bet is accepted.
Three picks at 2.00, 1.25 and 1.28 make odds of 3.20: ₦1,000 gives a possible win of ₦3,200, plus a ₦66 accumulator bonus.
Want to share your slip or copy a friend’s? Tap SHARE BET for a 7-digit booking code, or type a code into Search betting code: see our booking code guide. For more on combining picks, read accumulator bets explained and the full walkthrough on how to place a bet on ChampBet.
Step 8: Set a budget before you stake
Decide how much you can afford to lose this month, and stake a small share of it on each bet: 1% to 5% is a sensible range. With a ₦20,000 monthly budget, that is ₦200 to ₦1,000 a bet. Never borrow to bet, and never raise stakes to win back a loss. Our bankroll management guide shows how to set it up.
Step 9: Follow the match
Once kick-off comes, you can watch your bet in Open Bets. If you want to bet during the game, the live sportsbook offers odds that move with the action; read live betting explained first. On selected markets you can also cash out all or part of a bet early, for more or less than your stake: see the cash out guide.
Step 10: Settlement and withdrawal
Football bets settle on the result after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, not extra time or penalties, unless the market says otherwise. Winnings go straight to your balance.
If a match is postponed or abandoned and not played within 24 hours of the original kick-off, bets on it are normally void and your stake comes back. Markets already decided stand: if a game is abandoned at 2-1, Over 1.5 and Over 2.5 bets are settled as winners. In a multiple, a void leg is removed and the rest of the slip still counts.
To withdraw, request a payout from your account. ChampBet pays only to a BVN-verified bank account in your own registered name, and may ask you to complete identity verification first. The withdrawal guide explains each step.
Common beginner mistakes
- Huge accas. Ten legs look exciting, but one bad result sinks the slip.
- Betting on every match. Fewer, better-researched bets are easier to judge.
- Ignoring the draw. It happens more often than many people expect, so consider double chance or Draw No Bet.
- Paying for “sure” tips. No tip is certain, and paid tips are a common scam: read the truth about sure tips.
- Chasing losses. Stick to your budget, and see our football betting tips for a calmer approach.

Frequently asked questions
How do I start betting on football in Nigeria?
Open an account with a licensed operator, confirm your phone number, deposit with a method such as OPay, Paystack, Flutterwave or PalmPay, then pick a match and a market. Add your selection to the bet slip, enter a stake you can afford to lose and confirm the bet.
What is the minimum age to bet on football in Nigeria?
You must be 18 or older to bet with a licensed operator such as ChampBet. The registration form asks you to confirm that you are over 18, and the operator can ask for identity verification before withdrawals or some bonuses. Underage accounts are closed.
What is the easiest football bet for beginners?
A single on the match result (1X2) is the easiest to understand: pick the home win, draw or away win on one match. Double chance and Over/Under goals are also simple. Start with singles before moving on to accumulators, because every extra leg lowers your chance of winning.
How do I withdraw my betting winnings in Nigeria?
On ChampBet, winnings from settled bets go to your account balance, and you request a withdrawal from your account. Payments go only to a BVN-verified bank account in your own registered name, and you may need to complete identity verification first.
