Football betting markets are the different questions you can bet on in a single match: who wins, how many goals go in, whether both teams score, and more. This guide explains the football betting markets you will see most often, from 1X2 and double chance to Over 2.5, GG/NG and Asian handicap, with simple examples in naira.

Every odds figure here is an illustration, not a live price. If decimal odds are still new to you, start with our guide on how betting odds work.

What is a football betting market?

A football betting market is one specific type of outcome you can stake on in a match. The match result is one market. Total goals is another. Both teams to score is another. Each market has its own options and its own odds, and you can bet on several markets in the same game.

Most football markets settle on regular time, which is 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalties normally do not count unless the market name says so. ChampBet’s sports betting rules set out how each market is settled.

What does 1X2 mean?

1X2 is the full-time result market. “1” is a home win, “X” is a draw and “2” is an away win. You pick one of the three outcomes. If the match ends that way after regular time, your bet wins. Any other result and you lose your stake. It is the simplest football market and the most popular.

The ChampBet sportsbook coupon with W1, X and W2 (1X2) prices, handicap and totals columns for Champions League matches

On ChampBet the 1X2 market shows as W1, X and W2, next to the handicap and totals columns.

For example, say the home side is 2.10, the draw 3.30 and the away side 3.50. A ₦1,000 stake on “1” returns ₦2,100 if the home team wins.

The draw is the outcome people forget, which is why the next two markets exist.

What does double chance mean?

Double chance lets you cover two of the three 1X2 outcomes with one bet. Choose 1X (home win or draw), X2 (away win or draw) or 12 (either team wins, no draw). You win if either outcome happens. Because you cover more results, the odds are lower than a straight 1X2 pick.

Using the same example, an away side at 3.50 to win might be around 1.70 on X2. You give up some return in exchange for two ways to win.

  • 1X suits a home side you expect not to lose.
  • X2 suits an away side you rate to get at least a draw.
  • 12 suits a game you expect to have a winner.

What is Draw No Bet?

Draw No Bet (DNB) is a two-way bet on the home or away team with the draw taken out. If your team wins, you are paid at the DNB odds. If the match ends level, your stake comes back. If your team loses, the stake is lost.

Example: a home side at 2.10 in 1X2 might be about 1.55 Draw No Bet. Stake ₦1,000.

  • Home win: you collect ₦1,550.
  • Draw: you get your ₦1,000 back.
  • Away win: the ₦1,000 is gone.

What does Over 2.5 mean?

Over 2.5 means you are betting on three or more goals in the match, counting both teams. Under 2.5 means two goals or fewer. The half goal is there so the bet can never tie: no match ends with two and a half goals, so every bet on the line either wins or loses.

The same logic applies to every goal line. Here is what wins on the common lines, and what a 2-1 final score (three goals) does to each:

Line Over wins with Under wins with Result of a 2-1
0.5 1 or more goals 0 goals (0-0 only) Over wins
1.5 2 or more goals 0 or 1 goal Over wins
2.5 3 or more goals 0, 1 or 2 goals Over wins
3.5 4 or more goals 0, 1, 2 or 3 goals Under wins

Lower lines are easier to land, so they pay less. Over 0.5 only loses on a 0-0, so it is priced very short.

You will also see team goal lines (for example, home team Over 1.5) and first-half lines. They work the same way, counting only that team or that half.

What does BTTS (GG/NG) mean?

BTTS stands for Both Teams To Score. In Nigeria it is usually called GG (goal goal) and NG (no goal). GG wins if both teams score at least once. NG wins if at least one team fails to score. The match result does not matter: a 1-1 draw and a 3-1 win are both GG.

Over and under goal lines from 0.5 to 3.5 showing which side wins for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 or more goals

Quick check:

  • 2-1: GG wins.
  • 1-1: GG wins.
  • 3-0: NG wins, because the away side did not score.
  • 0-0: NG wins.

GG and Over 2.5 often get paired because both need goals, but they are not the same bet. A 3-0 lands Over 2.5 and loses GG. A 1-1 lands GG and loses Over 2.5.

How does handicap betting work?

Handicap betting gives one team a goal head start or deficit before kick-off, to even up an uneven match. You add the handicap to that team’s final score, then settle the bet on the adjusted result. A favourite at -1 has one goal taken off. An underdog at +1 has one goal added.

European handicap

European handicap is a three-way market, like 1X2, with whole-goal handicaps. Take the home team at -1:

  • Home wins by 2 or more goals: Home (-1) wins.
  • Home wins by exactly 1 goal: the handicap draw wins.
  • Match drawn or away win: Away (+1) wins.

There are no refunds: every bet wins or loses.

Asian handicap explained

Asian handicap removes the draw, so there are only two sides to pick. Stick to two line types and it stays simple.

Whole lines (0, -1, +1, -2). If the adjusted score is level, your stake is returned. Back the home side at -1 and they win 2-1: after the handicap it is 1-1, so you get your money back. A 3-1 win means your bet wins. A draw or a defeat means it loses. Asian handicap 0 works exactly like Draw No Bet.

Half lines (-0.5, +0.5, -1.5, +1.5). A refund is impossible because the adjusted score can never be level. Home -0.5 is the same as backing the home win. Away +0.5 wins if the away side wins or draws, the same as X2. Home -1.5 needs a win by two or more goals.

Quarter lines such as -0.25 also exist. They split your stake across two neighbouring lines.

What is a Correct Score bet?

A Correct Score bet means predicting the exact final score, such as 2-1 or 0-0. With so many possible scorelines it is one of the hardest football markets to land, which is why the odds are high. Even the most likely score in a match tends to carry big odds.

What does HT/FT mean?

HT/FT stands for half-time/full-time. You predict the result at the break and the result at the final whistle in one bet. “1/1” means the home team leads at half-time and wins. “X/2” means level at half-time, then an away win. Both parts must be right, so the odds are higher than a plain 1X2.

There are nine combinations: 1/1, 1/X, 1/2, X/1, X/X, X/2, 2/1, 2/X and 2/2. Comeback picks such as 2/1 pay the most because they happen least often.

Corners and cards

Corner and card markets work like goal lines. Over 9.5 corners wins with ten or more corners in the match. Under 9.5 wins with nine or fewer. Card lines count bookings in the same way, but a red card can be counted differently from a yellow, so check the settlement rules before you bet on cards.

Combining markets on one ticket

You can combine picks from different matches, such as a 1X2 in one game and GG in another, on one bet slip. That is an accumulator, and the odds multiply. Our guide to accumulator bets shows how the maths works.

Whatever market you choose, betting is entertainment and any stake can be lost, so set a budget you are comfortable with and use the responsible gaming tools if you need them.

Frequently asked questions

What does 1X2 mean in football betting?

1X2 is the full-time result market. 1 means the home team wins, X means the match ends in a draw and 2 means the away team wins. You pick one of the three outcomes. It is normally settled on the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time, not extra time or penalties.

What does GG and NG mean in betting?

GG means both teams score at least one goal in the match. NG means at least one team fails to score. They are the Nigerian names for the Both Teams To Score market, BTTS Yes and BTTS No. The final result does not matter, only whether each side scores.

What does Over 2.5 goals mean?

Over 2.5 goals wins if the match has three or more goals in total, counting both teams. Under 2.5 wins with two goals or fewer. The half goal means the bet can never tie, so a 2-1 result is Over and a 1-1 result is Under.

What is the difference between Draw No Bet and double chance?

Draw No Bet backs one team to win and returns your stake if the match is drawn. Double chance covers two outcomes, such as home win or draw, and pays if either happens. Double chance wins more often, while Draw No Bet usually pays higher odds.

How does Asian handicap -1 work?

On Asian handicap -1, your team must win by two or more goals for the bet to win. If they win by exactly one goal, your stake is returned. If the match is drawn or your team loses, the bet loses.
