Thirty-six clubs play eight matches each in one league table, the top eight go straight to the round of 16, and positions 9 to 24 fight through play-offs. How does the Champions League format work in 2026/27?
All 36 clubs sit in one league table. Each plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away, two drawn from each of four seeding pots. A win is worth three points and a draw one. The top eight reach the round of 16, clubs ranked 9th to 24th go into two-legged play-offs, and the bottom twelve are out.
That split comes straight from Article 17 of UEFA’s 2026/27 regulations. This is the third season of the league phase format, and UEFA’s own explainer video shows how it works:
A few details that matter for betting:
- Play-off seeding: clubs ranked 9th to 16th are seeded against those ranked 17th to 24th, with the return leg at home in principle. Finishing 16th rather than 17th has real value.
- No safety net: clubs ranked 25th to 36th are eliminated with no route into the Europa League.
- Knockouts: from the play-offs to the semi-finals, every tie is two legs. The final is a single match.

These are UEFA’s published dates, which it notes can change. England has five clubs in the league phase: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United.
Champions League kick-off times in Nigeria
UEFA lists most matches at 21:00 Central European Time, with some at 18:45. Nigeria stays on West Africa Time all year, while Europe moves its clocks:
- Until 25 October 2026 and from 28 March 2027: games start at 17:45 and 20:00 WAT. Matchdays 1 to 3, the quarter-finals and the semi-finals fall in these windows.
- From November to late March: Central European Time and WAT match, so kick-offs are 18:45 and 21:00 WAT.
On Matchday 8, 27 January 2027, all 18 matches kick off at the same time. That night is built for live betting, but only if you can follow several games at once.

Do away goals still count in the Champions League?
No, not in knockout ties. UEFA removed the away goals rule from all its club competitions from 2021/22. If two teams are level on aggregate after the second leg, they play two 15-minute periods of extra time, then a penalty shoot-out if still level, as set out in Article 21 of the regulations.
Two consequences for your bets:
- 1X2 ignores extra time. Match markets settle on 90 minutes plus stoppage time under ChampBet’s sports betting rules. If a second leg ends 1-1 and your team goes through on penalties, a bet on them to win the match still loses. A “to qualify” market, where offered, is the one that counts extra time and penalties.
- First legs are less distorted. A home side no longer fears conceding a costly away goal, so first legs can be more open than they were before 2021. Judge each tie on the teams, not on old habits.
Away goals have not vanished completely: “higher number of away goals scored” is still one of the tie-breakers when clubs finish level on points in the league phase table.

How does rotation affect Champions League bets?
Coaches juggle league and European games, so rotation cuts both ways. Some rest players at the weekend before a big European night. Others rotate in Europe once their place in the top eight is safe, or once they are out of reach. Do not overrate the badge
Big clubs attract heavy backing, which shortens their prices. A Pot 4 side at home can be harder to beat than the odds suggest, especially early in the league phase when its squad is fresh.
Price the draw in tight games
Two well-matched sides with plenty to lose often settle for a point. If you fancy one side in a close game, consider Draw No Bet rather than the straight win.
Read the second leg as a new match
In a second leg, the scoreline from the first changes how both teams play. A side two goals down must attack; a side protecting a lead may sit deep. That game state matters more than either team’s league form.
