How to Bet on Basketball: Markets, Overtime and NBA Tips
How to bet on basketball in Nigeria: moneyline, handicap, totals, quarters and player props, how overtime is settled, NBA 2026-27 dates and practical tips.
In this guide
To bet on basketball, choose a game, pick a market such as the winner, a points handicap or total points, add the price to your bet slip and enter your stake. The big difference from football is that basketball has no draws in the final result, and most bets include overtime. This guide covers every main market, how overtime is settled at ChampBet and practical NBA betting tips.
All odds and lines below are examples, not live prices.
How do you bet on basketball?
Betting on basketball works like any sports bet: find the game, choose a market, add the selection to your slip, set your stake and confirm. On ChampBet that takes about a minute on your phone. The skill is in choosing markets you understand and reading the overtime rules.
- Open the ChampBet sportsbook, or Live for games in progress.
- In the left menu, under All Sports, choose Basketball, then a competition.
- Pick a game and open its markets.
- Tap a price. It drops into the bet slip on the right, or at the bottom on mobile.
- Enter your stake. The slip shows the odds and your possible win.
- Check everything, then place the bet.
The sportsbook layout: sports menu on the left, winner, handicap and totals columns in the centre, bet slip on the right. Football is shown here.

Basketball basics for bettors
- NBA games have four 12-minute quarters, 48 minutes in all.
- FIBA games, including most leagues outside the United States, have four 10-minute quarters, 40 minutes in all.
- Overtime periods are five minutes long and keep coming until one team leads at the end of one.
Because overtime always produces a winner, the main “who wins” market has two outcomes, not three.
Which basketball betting markets are there?
The main basketball markets are the match winner (moneyline), the points handicap (spread), total points (over/under), quarter and half markets, and player props. Not every game carries every market, so open the game to see what is offered.
| Market | What you are betting on | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Moneyline (winner) | Which team wins, overtime included | Home win at 1.40 |
| 3-way (regular time) | Home, draw or away after regulation only | Draw at 15.00 |
| Handicap (spread) | The winner after a points start is applied | Home -5.5 at 1.90 |
| Totals (over/under) | Combined points above or below a line | Over 224.5 at 1.88 |
| Team totals | One team’s points above or below a line | Away over 110.5 |
| Quarters and halves | Winner, handicap or total for one period | 1st quarter over 55.5 |
| Player props | One player’s points, rebounds or assists | Over 24.5 points |
Moneyline (match winner)
The moneyline is the simplest bet: pick the team that wins. A ₦1,000 stake on a favourite at 1.40 returns ₦1,400, while the same stake on an underdog at 3.00 returns ₦3,000. Our guide to how betting odds work shows how to turn any price into a probability.
Handicap (point spread)
Basketball scores are high, so a points handicap evens up a lopsided game. If the home side is -5.5 at 1.90, it must win by six or more. The away side at +5.5 wins your bet if it wins outright or loses by five or fewer.
Whole-number lines can land exactly on the margin. ChampBet’s rules say push rules apply in two-way basketball markets: a single bet is returned, and in a multiple that selection is treated as void.
Totals (over/under points)
A totals bet is on the combined points of both teams. With a line of 224.5, a 115-112 game (227 points) wins an over bet and a 108-110 game (218 points) wins an under bet. Pace matters: fast teams that shoot early in the shot clock push totals up.
Quarters and halves
You can bet on a single quarter or half: its winner, handicap or total. These markets settle sooner, but they are more random, because one hot shooting spell can swing a single quarter.
Player props
Props are bets on one player’s numbers, such as points, rebounds, assists or a double-double. At ChampBet, the player must be dressed and see court time for the bet to stand, otherwise it is void.
How is overtime treated in basketball betting?
At ChampBet, overtime counts for most basketball bets. The ChampBet sports betting rules say: “All pre-game bets include overtime unless otherwise stated.” The one clear exception: “If there are markets offered for regular time including the option ‘Draw’ then overtime(s) will not count.”
Here is how that plays out by market:
| Market | Does overtime count? |
|---|---|
| Pre-game winner, handicap, totals | Yes, unless the market says otherwise |
| Regular-time 3-way (with a Draw) | No |
| Live (in-play) game bets | Yes |
| Live half bets | Yes, overtime is part of the second half |
| Live 4th quarter bets | Yes, overtime is added to the 4th quarter |
| Player props | Yes, unless specified otherwise |
Two more rules are worth knowing:
- Start date. “All games must start on the scheduled date (local stadium time) for bets to stand.” NBA dates are in US time, which is behind Nigeria, so check the date and time shown on the event.
- Abandoned games. If a game is stopped after it starts, bets stand only if 5 minutes or less of scheduled game time was left, unless the market was already decided.
When does the 2026-27 NBA season start?
The 2026-27 NBA regular season starts on Tuesday 20 October 2026 and ends on Sunday 11 April 2027, according to the NBA’s official schedule announcement. Each team plays 82 regular-season games.
Opening night is a tripleheader. The first game, Boston Celtics at Detroit Pistons, tips off at 3 p.m. ET, which is 8 p.m. in Lagos. The defending champions, the New York Knicks, host the Philadelphia 76ers at 7 p.m. ET, which is midnight in Lagos.
That time gap shapes NBA betting from Nigeria. Most evening games in the US tip off between about midnight and 4 a.m. Nigerian time, and an hour later once US clocks go back on 1 November. Place pre-match bets before you sleep rather than staying up to chase live prices.
NBA betting tips that actually help
No tip makes a bet certain. These habits help you make better decisions and protect your money.
- Check injury news late. NBA teams publish injury reports before games, and a star sitting out can move the handicap by several points.
- Watch the schedule. Teams playing on back-to-back nights, or at the end of a long road trip, can tire late in games.
- Think in points, not names. A famous team at -12.5 still has to win by 13. Ask whether the margin is realistic, not just who wins.
- Use totals when you read pace well. If you know two teams play fast or slow, totals let you use that view without picking a winner.
- Look for value, not certainty. Compare your own estimate with the implied probability of the price. Our guide to value betting shows the maths.
- Go easy on long accas. Each extra game multiplies the risk as well as the odds. See accumulator bets explained.
- Respect live swings. Basketball runs are common, so a 10-point lead can vanish in minutes. Our live betting guide covers in-play basics.
- Keep stakes flat. A fixed percentage of your budget per bet stops a bad night becoming a bad month. See bankroll management.

Frequently asked questions
How do you bet on basketball?
Pick a game in the sportsbook, choose a market such as the match winner, a points handicap or total points, and tap the price to add it to your bet slip. Enter your stake, check the possible win and place the bet. Most basketball bets include overtime unless the market says otherwise.
Does overtime count in basketball bets?
Usually, yes. Under ChampBet's sports rules, all pre-game basketball bets include overtime unless otherwise stated, and live game, half and fourth-quarter bets include it too. The exception is a market for regular time that offers a Draw option: there, overtime does not count.
What is a moneyline bet in basketball?
A moneyline is a bet on which team wins the game, overtime included. There is no draw, because basketball plays extra periods until there is a winner. The favourite has the shorter price, so a ₦1,000 stake on a 1.40 favourite returns ₦1,400 if it wins.
What does a handicap of -5.5 mean in basketball?
A -5.5 handicap means your team must win by six points or more for the bet to win. If you back the other side at +5.5, you win if that team wins outright or loses by five points or fewer. The half point means the bet cannot end level.
