How to Play Roulette: Bets, Payouts and Lightning Roulette
How to play roulette: European vs American wheels, every inside and outside bet with payouts, how Lightning Roulette works and why no system beats the edge.
In this guide
To play roulette, you bet on where a ball will land on a spinning wheel: one number, a group of numbers, a colour, odd or even, or high or low. The dealer spins, the ball settles in one pocket, and every bet that covers that number pays at fixed odds. This guide shows how to play roulette, from European and American wheels to every bet and payout, Lightning Roulette and why no betting system beats the house edge.
How does a roulette round work?
A roulette round has three steps. You place chips on the betting layout while the timer runs. The dealer spins the wheel and launches the ball, and betting closes. When the ball settles, the winning number is announced, losing bets are cleared and winning bets are paid at the odds for that bet.
On a live table, the layout appears on your screen over the video. Tap a chip value, then tap the spots you want. You can stack several bets in the same round, and most games let you repeat or double your last bets with one button.
European vs American roulette: what is the difference?
European roulette has 37 pockets: the numbers 1 to 36 and a single green zero. American roulette adds a double zero, so its wheel has 38 pockets. Both pay the same odds, which means the extra pocket works only for the house. The house edge is 2.70% on a single-zero wheel and 5.26% on a double-zero wheel.
| Wheel | Pockets | Zeros | House edge | Return to player |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| European | 37 | 0 | 2.70% | 97.30% |
| American | 38 | 0 and 00 | 5.26% | 94.74% |
Here is where those figures come from. A straight-up bet pays 35 to 1, but on a European wheel the true odds are 36 to 1. Bet ₦1,000 on one number for 37 spins and you stake ₦37,000. On average your number lands once and returns ₦36,000, so you are ₦1,000 down: 1 in 37, or 2.70%. On an American wheel, 38 spins cost ₦38,000 for the same ₦36,000 return, a loss of ₦2,000, or 5.26%. Ontario’s PlaySmart site gives the same 5.26% for American roulette’s house edge.
French roulette uses the single-zero wheel too. Evolution’s French Roulette adds the La Partage rule: if you make an even-money bet and the ball lands on zero, you lose only half your stake. Check the help screen of any French table for the exact rule it uses.
Roulette bets and payouts
Roulette bets split into two groups. Inside bets cover a single number or a small group on the number grid. Outside bets cover large groups along the edge of the layout. Inside bets pay more because they win less often. On a single-zero wheel, all of them carry the same 2.70% house edge.
Every standard bet on a single-zero wheel, with its payout.
Inside bets
| Bet | Numbers covered | Pays | Winnings on ₦1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Straight up | 1 | 35:1 | ₦35,000 |
| Split | 2 | 17:1 | ₦17,000 |
| Street | 3 | 11:1 | ₦11,000 |
| Corner | 4 | 8:1 | ₦8,000 |
| Six line | 6 | 5:1 | ₦5,000 |
Outside bets
| Bet | Numbers covered | Pays | Winnings on ₦1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dozen (1-12, 13-24, 25-36) | 12 | 2:1 | ₦2,000 |
| Column | 12 | 2:1 | ₦2,000 |
| Red or Black | 18 | 1:1 | ₦1,000 |
| Odd or Even | 18 | 1:1 | ₦1,000 |
| 1-18 or 19-36 | 18 | 1:1 | ₦1,000 |
Your stake comes back on top of the winnings in every case. The zero is green and belongs to no colour, dozen or column, so all outside bets lose when it lands, unless the table uses a rule such as La Partage. That single pocket is the whole house edge.
Many live tables also show a racetrack for neighbour bets, such as a number plus the two pockets either side of it on the wheel. These are bundles of straight-up bets placed in one tap, so the payout and the edge are the same as the bets inside them.
How does Lightning Roulette work?
Lightning Roulette is Evolution’s live roulette with a single-zero wheel and an extra feature in every round. After betting closes, the presenter pulls a lever and one to five Lucky Numbers are struck by lightning, each with a random multiplier between 50x and 500x. If the ball lands on a Lucky Number you backed straight up, your bet pays at that multiplier.
The catch sits in the normal payout. According to the official Lightning Roulette page, straight-up bets that are not multiplied pay 29 to 1 instead of the usual 35 to 1. Splits, corners, red or black, dozens and every other bet pay the same as standard roulette.
In practice you are swapping part of every ordinary straight-up win for a small chance at a big multiplier. If you mostly play outside bets, Lightning Roulette pays you exactly like a normal table. If you play single numbers, expect fewer and larger wins, with long gaps between them.
Why don’t betting systems like Martingale beat the edge?
Betting systems change the size of your stakes, not the odds of the wheel. Every spin carries the same house edge, and the wheel has no memory of past results. A system can turn many small wins into one large loss, or the other way round, but over enough spins the edge still takes its share.
Take Martingale on red, starting at ₦1,000 and doubling after each loss:
| Spin | Stake | Total staked so far |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ₦1,000 | ₦1,000 |
| 2 | ₦2,000 | ₦3,000 |
| 3 | ₦4,000 | ₦7,000 |
| 4 | ₦8,000 | ₦15,000 |
| 5 | ₦16,000 | ₦31,000 |
| 6 | ₦32,000 | ₦63,000 |
| 7 | ₦64,000 | ₦127,000 |
After six losses in a row, you are putting ₦64,000 on the table to win back ₦1,000 of profit. Runs like that are not rare over a long session, and the table maximum or your balance ends the plan before the win arrives. PlaySmart makes the same point in its roulette strategy advice: doubling after losses burns through a budget faster, with no promise of winning the losses back.
The same goes for the results board. Hot and cold numbers describe the past. The next spin is just as likely to land on a number that has not appeared in 100 spins as on one that hit twice in a row.
Budget tips for roulette
- Pick single-zero tables. European, French and Lightning Roulette all use one zero.
- Set a session budget first. Decide the amount, then size your chips so it lasts. Our bankroll management guide shows a simple method.
- Keep stakes steady. Raising stakes to chase losses is Martingale by another name.
- Choose your style on purpose. Outside bets give steadier, smaller swings. Inside bets give longer gaps and bigger wins. The edge is the same.
- Watch the pace. Auto roulette tables spin quickly, so set a time limit as well as a money limit.
- Fix your limit and keep it. The ChampBet responsible gaming rules advise setting a monthly amount in advance and never raising it once set.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best bet in roulette?
No bet beats the house edge. On a single-zero European wheel, every standard bet carries the same 2.70% edge, whether you back red or one number. What changes is how often you win and how much: outside bets win often and pay little, inside bets win rarely and pay more.
What is the difference between European and American roulette?
European roulette has 37 pockets: numbers 1 to 36 and a single zero. American roulette adds a double zero, making 38 pockets. The payouts are the same, so the extra pocket raises the house edge from 2.70% to 5.26%. Choose single-zero tables when you can.
How does Lightning Roulette work?
Lightning Roulette is Evolution's live roulette with one to five Lucky Numbers struck by lightning each round, each with a multiplier from 50x to 500x. A winning straight-up bet on a Lucky Number pays at that multiplier. In return, straight-up bets that are not struck pay 29:1 instead of 35:1.
Does the Martingale system work in roulette?
No. Martingale doubles your stake after every loss, hoping one win recovers everything. A losing run quickly pushes stakes beyond your budget or the table limit, and the house edge applies to every spin. It changes how your results arrive, not the long-run loss.
What does 35 to 1 mean in roulette?
35 to 1 means you win 35 times your stake and also get your stake back. A ₦1,000 straight-up bet on the winning number returns ₦36,000: ₦35,000 in winnings plus your ₦1,000. Odds written this way always show the profit, not the total return.
