RTP means return to player: the percentage of all money staked on a casino game that the game is designed to pay back as winnings over the long run. A slot with a 96% RTP returns ₦96 for every ₦100 staked across millions of spins and keeps ₦4 as the house edge. It is a long-run average, not a forecast for your session. Here is what RTP means in practice, how it differs from volatility, and where to find it.

What does RTP mean?

RTP stands for return to player. It is the theoretical share of all stakes a game pays back as winnings, worked out over a very large number of rounds. If a slot has a 96.5% RTP, then across millions of spins it returns about ₦96.50 of every ₦100 staked. The remaining 3.5% is the house edge.

The two figures always add up to 100%:

  • RTP = total paid out ÷ total staked, over the long run.
  • House edge = 100% minus RTP.

RTP is set by the game’s maths: how often each symbol lands, what each win pays and how often features trigger. Game makers test it over enormous numbers of simulated rounds before release.

RTP and the house edge in real games

Here are the RTPs that game makers publish for some well-known titles, checked on their official pages on 7 October 2026:

Game Maker Published RTP House edge
Fortune Tiger PG Soft 96.81% 3.19%
Sweet Bonanza 1000 Pragmatic Play 96.53% 3.47%
Big Bass Bonanza 1000 Pragmatic Play 96.51% 3.49%
Gates of Olympus Pragmatic Play 96.50% 3.50%
Wolf Gold Pragmatic Play 96.01% 3.99%
Aviator Spribe 97% 3%

What RTP costs you per session

A useful way to read RTP is as an average cost of play. Multiply your total stakes by the house edge:

  • 200 spins at ₦100 = ₦20,000 staked.
  • At a 96.5% RTP, the long-run average cost is 3.5% of ₦20,000 = ₦700.

Notice that RTP applies to everything you stake, not to your deposit. If you deposit ₦10,000 and keep re-staking your wins, you might stake ₦50,000 in total, and the average cost becomes ₦1,750. Faster play and longer sessions cost more, even at the same RTP. These figures are averages: a single session can end far above or below them.

Why RTP does not apply to one session

RTP is measured over a huge number of rounds, so it says little about the next hour. In a short session, luck dominates. You can lose your whole budget on a 96.5% slot or finish well ahead. Only as the number of spins climbs into the hundreds of thousands do results settle close to the published figure.

The UK Gambling Commission puts it clearly: RTP is an average achieved over a significant number of plays, not each time a game is played. Its guidance on measuring RTP gives an example: a game designed for 91.68% RTP can return anywhere between 89.93% and 93.43% after 400,000 games and still be working correctly. Your 200 spins sit in a far wider range than that.

RTP versus volatility

RTP tells you how much a game pays back in the long run. Volatility tells you how it pays: low-volatility slots pay small wins often, high-volatility slots go quiet for long spells and then pay big, and medium sits between. Two games with the same 96.5% RTP can feel completely different to play.

Chart comparing low, medium and high slot volatility with an RTP example of ₦96 returned per ₦100 staked

Volatility How it feels Budget tip
Low Frequent small wins, slow swings Your budget tends to last longer
Medium A balance of regular hits and occasional bigger ones A good starting point
High Long dry runs, rare large wins, most value in the bonus round Use smaller stakes so you can ride the swings

As a rule, games built around very high maximum wins sit at the high end of volatility. For how features and tumbles create those swings, see how slots work.

Can the same game have different RTPs?

Yes. Many game makers build several certified versions of the same game, each with a slightly different RTP, and each casino or market runs one of them. The game looks and plays the same, but small changes to symbol values or feature frequency shift the long-run return.

So the figure on a maker’s website may not be the version running at every casino. The number that counts is the one inside the game you open. Some games also list a separate RTP for their bonus buy feature, so check that too if you use it.

How to find a game’s RTP

  1. Open the game from the ChampBet casino lobby.
  2. Tap the info icon. It is usually an “i”, a question mark or a menu (three lines) icon.
  3. Open the game rules or paytable and scroll down. Look for “theoretical RTP” or “return to player”.
  4. Check for extras. Note any separate RTP for bonus buy or optional features.

What is ChampBet’s Casino Live RTP page?

The Casino Live RTP page shows how slots have actually been paying over short recent windows. It highlights games that have paid above their usual rate (“hot”) and below it (“cold”), alongside recent big wins. On a phone, it is the Casino Live RTP tab at the top of the casino lobby.

How to read Live RTP

Live RTP uses the same sum as above, total paid out ÷ total staked, but over a short window such as the last hour rather than millions of spins. Over a short window, results swing widely. A slot can show a live figure well above 100% after one big win, or well below its theoretical RTP after a quiet spell.

Keep two things in mind:

  • It describes the past. A game that paid well in the last hour has not changed its maths. The next spin is as random as every other, and previous wins or losses do not affect the odds.
  • Hot does not mean it will keep paying, and cold does not mean a win is due. Use the page to see what others are playing and which wins have landed, not as a signal for where to stake.

RTP, bonuses and cashback

RTP also matters when you clear a bonus. Wagering means staking a set amount, and the house edge applies to every naira of it, so the expected cost of clearing a bonus grows with the wagering requirement. Our guide to the ChampBet welcome bonus explains how the casino offer’s wagering works.

Weekly Cashback on Casino Slots works the other way: it returns 2.5% to 10% of your net weekly slots loss as real money every Monday, depending on your Champions Club level, from a ₦10,000 minimum loss, with crash games excluded. Full terms apply.

Jackpot slots carry part of their RTP in the prize pool: see casino jackpots explained.

Play with the numbers in mind

RTP is a long-run average, volatility shapes the ride, and Live RTP is a snapshot of the recent past. Check a game’s RTP in its rules before you play, set a budget with our bankroll guide, then browse the ChampBet slots lobby for a game that suits you.

Frequently asked questions

What does RTP mean in casino games?

RTP stands for return to player. It is the share of all money staked on a game that the game is designed to pay back as winnings over a very large number of rounds. A slot with a 96% RTP returns ₦96 for every ₦100 staked in the long run, and the other ₦4 is the house edge.

Does a high RTP mean I will win?

No. RTP is an average over millions of spins, not a promise for your session. A 96.5% slot can take your whole budget in an hour or pay well above its RTP, depending on luck and volatility. A higher RTP only means the game keeps slightly less over the long run.

Where can I see the RTP of a slot?

Open the game and look in its paytable, information or game rules screen, usually behind an i, question mark or menu icon. The theoretical RTP is normally listed near the end of the rules, and that is the figure for the exact version of the game you are playing.

What is the difference between RTP and Live RTP?

RTP is the theoretical long-run return built into a game. Live RTP is what a game has actually paid out over a short recent window, such as the last hour. Live figures swing widely by chance, so they describe the recent past and do not predict the next spin.

What is a good RTP for a slot?

Many modern online slots publish an RTP of around 96%. Pragmatic Play lists 96.50% for Gates of Olympus, for example, and PG Soft lists 96.81% for Fortune Tiger. Weigh RTP alongside volatility and how much you enjoy the game, rather than chasing small differences.
